In Rose Pistola, architect Cass Calder Smith created a cosmopolitan
café with both nautical and old North Beach references.
The restaurant features a sweeping 30’ mahogany bar
below a yacht-like arched ceiling, a chef’s dining
counter overlooking the open kitchen, booths & banquettes
in the carpeted dining area, and window-side tables fronting
both busy Columbus Avenue and the quieter Stockton Street
with swing-out floor-to-ceiling windows. The walls are graced
with elegant black-and-white photographs that document the
heyday of North Beach and the beat era.
In addition to the outdoor, sidewalk tables, the restaurant
has three distinct dining areas inside, each delivering a
different experience. Entering from the Columbus Avenue side
of the restaurant, you enter the bar space with its tiled
floor and small, trattoria-style tables along the window.
This area tends to be lively and raucous, with the bar crowd
and live music Friday and Saturday nights.
As you move through the restaurant, you next come to the
main dining room, which holds the majority of our seating.
Directly across from the open kitchen, the carpeted room
is ringed by a continuous banquette with three large round
tables in the center. The room seats approximately 70 people
at its capacity.
Finally, beyond the main dining room and near the Stockton
Street entrance is our alcove; an area seating up to 26 people.
The alcove is a semi-private dining room, separated from
the rest of the restaurant by a few feet, but not closed
off by a door. This carpeted space with two parallel banquettes,
tends to be quieter and also has beautiful window tables.
